SUGAYA TATARA SANNAI

TATARA is the oldest historical Iron factory. The tatara iron making method is a traditional process for smelting iron that has been handed down through the generations.

Nestled in the Chugoku mountains, the Sugaya TATARA sannai is a iron smelting factory using the traditional processes that have been handed down through the generations. Located in Shimane Prefecture, the factory is the only remaining location where traditional sand-iron is made in this type of building. Here, you can enjoy a unique view of traditional Japanese wooden architecture like the high beamed ceiling and roof made of grasses. In the middle of the structure, you can view the foot controlled bellow furnace used to smelt iron which is still in use to this day.
